How to prepare your business for a water disaster

Flooding in your Natchez business can be time-consuming, expensive, and overwhelming. If you do not recover quickly, you could potentially lose customers or even go out of business. Working with an established and reputable restoration company to remediate damage can make a crucial difference in returning your business to normal operations.

Preparedness is another important key to getting back to business. SERVPRO® has created tools to help prepare you for a catastrophic event such as a flood. With our Emergency Ready Plan® (ERP) we will assess your property in person, look for potential vulnerabilities, and make recommendations that can minimize damage. Our team will also locate all of your emergency shut-offs and other key locations and compile this information into our ERP app for your use.

You can then personalize your profile to appoint team members to make decisions if you are unavailable during a crisis. The ERP will also include a blueprint of your business, names of important contacts and phone numbers, utility shut-off locations, and any other important information you want to include. You also can indicate that you want SERVPRO® to respond in the event of an emergency, which can help speed up the mitigation process.

The SERVPRO® ERP allows a business owner to indicate priorities regarding areas of the business to restore first or documents or records to inventory and pack out. Take the opportunity to work with our IICRC certified technicians on ideas that can keep at least a portion of your business open during the recovery so that your clientele does not lose confidence in your products or services during the restoration process.

SERVPRO of Natchez is ready to work with you to recover from a flooding event. Take our service to another level by developing an Emergency Ready Plan and Profile. Call (601) 304-5554 to get the process started

SERVPRO® of Natchez proudly offers exterior property cleaning, fire and water damage restoration, low-pressure roof cleaning, wood and deck pressure washing, interior power washing, and water extraction for commercial and residential clients!

Residential

Residential services include exterior sidings, driveways, sidewalks and patios, fences, and roofs. Regular cleaning such as pressure washing, patio washing, and concrete or driveway washing can help to prevent premature aging which reduces maintenance costs and saves you money. When you compare the relatively low price of proper residential pressure wash cleaning to the high cost of home repairs or even replacement, it is easy to see why homeowners choose to have this type of work done on a regular basis. Not to mention, it just plain looks better when it’s clean.

Commercial

We offer our commercial property owners comprehensive power washing solutions. No two businesses are alike. That’s why we provide tailored commercial services that will fulfill your needs. Shopping malls, banks, restaurants, and convenience stores typically require unique services at different times. We take pride in offering flexible service plans and scheduling to accommodate your needs.

Let us keep your business looking picture-perfect. We always ensure that our work is implemented at a time that will minimize interference with your business operations. What’s more, our team will always come to your property with the specialized commercial services equipment needed to complete the task and provide professional results.

Apartment and Homeowners Association (HOA)

At some point during every interview, a potential resident will tour the neighborhood. The first impressions that are made during this tour can go a long way towards filling the unit or letting it sit empty. Are the common areas and parking lots of your apartment complex or HOA community clean and inviting? What about the units themselves? Do they reflect a clean and properly maintained community?  If you have been looking for a company to handle all of your properties' exterior cleaning and maintenance needs look no further!

We have the experience and the equipment to get the job done right!

Removing microbial growth is time-consuming and must be performed by a professional remediation company to prevent cross-contamination. Trying to do it yourself can be very difficult and also can put your safety at risk. Having the microbial growth professionally removed ensures that the job is done right and that your safety and health are protected.

Pin Hole Leaks

5/12/2021 (Permalink)

According to repairmyleak.com, there are a couple forms of corrosion in copper pipes, but pitting corrosion is most likely to culminate in pinhole leaks in plumbing systems made of copper.

"Pitting corrosion is the non-uniform localized attack of the wall of a copper tube, pipe, or fittings initiated on the inside surface of copper water pipes. Usually, only small areas of the metal surface are attacked.

Pitting corrosion can be classified into three types:

Type I
cause: Hard Water
Type I pitting is associated with hard or moderately hard waters with a pH between 7 and 7.8, and it is most likely to occur in cold water. The pitting is deep and narrow, and results in pipe failure.

Type II
cause: Soft Water
Type II pitting occurs only in certain soft waters, with a pH below 7.2 and occurs rarely in temperatures below 140° F. The pitting that occurs is narrower than in Type I, but still results in pipe failure.

Type III
cause: Cold, Soft Water High PH
Type III pitting occurs in cold soft waters having a pH above 8.0. It is a more generalized form of pitting, which tends to be wide and shallow and results in blue water, byproduct releases, or pipe blockage."

Testing the Air Quality at your Commercial Business

10/28/2019 (Permalink)

A wall at a local business in Natchez that was affected by water damage and mold.

When owning a business, there are many factors to consider when assessing the safety of your employees and customers.  According to OSHA employers are required to “Provide a workplace free from serious recognized hazards and comply with standards, rules and regulations issued under the OSH Act.”  This can pertain to many things, but did you ever think about the air quality in your business environment.

If your business has had water damage, or suffered from high humidity, you could have mold spores in the air that you, your employees, and customers are breathing.  That’s where we can help.

SERVPRO of Natchez can come inspect your business for mold and perform an “indoor air quality test.”  This test can collect any mold spores into a cartridge and then we send this off to a lab to have it tested.  If you have elevated spores, our team can then assess this report and create a plan to remediate the mold spores creating a clean environment for your business.  If you think you might have a mold problem in your business call SERVPRO of Natchez and we can make it “Like it never even happened.”

Workplace Drills during an Emergency

10/22/2019 (Permalink)

Practice safety drills in your work enivironment in the event of an emergency to be prepared in the event of a real emergency.

Unexpected events such as fires, storms, or floods can cause panic and chaos within a workplace.  Conducting drills will help employees learn what to do when a disaster strikes.  Having a plan and practicing that plan will ensure that your business is ready for any emergency. Here are 3 tips to help make sure your emergency drills are as effective as possible.

  1. Conduct Emergency Drills Regularly

The number of drills your company needs to conduct can vary based on the following factors:

  • Employee turnover rates
  • Employee schedules
  • Workplace risk factors
  • State laws
  • Local municipality laws or codes
  • Industry-Specific guidelines
  1. Keep the Drill Unpredictable

Planned drills, while still helpful, are not nearly as effective as an unscheduled drill.  Regular unannounced drills will keep employees on their toes.  With this approach, workers are more likely to find the best and safest building exits during a real-life disaster.

  1. Evaluate Each Drill

It is important to conduct regular drills, but it is also important to have post-drill evaluations.  Make sure to look at what worked and where the problem areas are.  Make sure to ask employees for their feedback.

Commercial Carpet Cleaning

2/19/2019 (Permalink)

Commercial cleaning can be a lot of work, especially if it’s a large carpeted area. Let us help you with that. We would love to give you an estimate!

Having your carpets and rugs cleaned makes for a nice appearance for your customers.

The dust, dirt, and other debris that finds its way into the carpet fibers can eventually get into the air where it can cause odors and even respiratory infections. So therefore having your carpets and rugs professional cleaned improves the air quality of the office/building.

Rented carpet cleaning machines are not always effective as they are used over and over by many different people and clean with harsh chemicals that leave an unpleasant smell and a residue in the carpet that attracts even more dirt and debris.  It is always better to hire a professional for that reason alone.

SERVPRO of Natchez offers free quotes for carpet cleaning. We can come out, measure, give you a quote, and proceed with cleaning while we are there once we have your approval. We have a very flexible schedule and can usually get you scheduled the week you call. Just give our office at call at 601.304.5554.

Commercial Water Damage

10/22/2018 (Permalink)

One definition of a disaster is a serious disruption, occurring over a relatively short time, of the functioning of a community or a society involving widespread human, material, economic or environmental loss. When we talk to people in the commercial setting they think of a disaster as a major weather-related event.

A disaster in a commercial setting is anything that causes disruption to business or causes damage to services or goods that negatively impact profitability.

Failed Plumbing: Just like your home, a commercial building is just as susceptible to failed plumbing. Frozen pipe bursts are common in the winter because people may times try to cut cost and may not keep the property from freezing. The strain on plumbing because of everyday harsh use also can weaken the plumbing and make it vulnerable.

Appliances & Equipment: From a simple water heater malfunction to major machinery using high water pressure. Appliances and equipment, even with the best maintenance sometimes fail. Evaluate the equipment in your commercial building. If you are a restaurant or food service provider you may be more at risk.

Sprinkler System Malfunction: Have regular maintenance performed on your sprinkler system annually. This the best way to prevent malfunctions.

Roof Leaks: Okay this one is kind of weather related. But it doesn’t take huge thunderstorm to leave water in your building if you have roof issues. A regular shower can do a great amount of damage if the roof allows it to leak inside.

At any point your commercial property is faced with a disaster call SERVPRO of Natchez 601.304.5554 and let our trained professionals take the hassle off your hands.

What's Inside Your Ducts?

10/5/2018 (Permalink)

Did you know, your ventilation system is often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality? Inspecting the ductwork in your facility or home should be a high priority. In most cases, the HVAC system has been operating for some time without much attention. Dirty ducts can circulate odors, contaminants such as mold, and irritating dust throughout your building or home.

A routine part of SERVPRO of Natchez Professional services is inspecting the heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit (HVAC). Keeping the HVAC and ductwork clean can potentially extend the life span of the equipment by allowing it to operate at peak condition, which may help save you money. Duct cleaning may not always be necessary. SERVPRO of Natchez professionals will inspect your HVAC system and ductwork and make recommendations about the best way to address any indoor air quality concerns. This inspection can help save you money and provide peace of mind on the health of your HVAC system and ductwork.

In some circumstances, such as after fire, smoke or suspected mold growth, duct cleaning becomes an essential part of the cleanup process. In these cases, SERVPRO of Natchez professionals can often restore the HVAC system and ductwork to pre-damage condition.

If you have a fuel burning furnace, stove or fireplace, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends they be inspected for proper functioning, and be serviced before each heating season to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning.

The SERVPRO Duct Cleaning System is proven and cost efficient. Unlike the majority of duct cleaning services, SERVPRO of Natchez professionals use a portable ventilation and air duct cleaning system to examine ductwork and make a clean sweep, removing years of dust and grime.

  • The process begins by using patented equipment including a roto-scraper, which automatically adapts to the duct’s shape and diameter while traveling through the duct, removing debris and filth before vacuuming begins.

  • Next, a powerful push-pull air delivery and collection system transfers the debris from the ducting to a 16-gallon container.

  • Air is filtered through a HEPA filtration system, removing 99.97 percent of the particles in the airstream. HEPA filters capture debris and keep the indoor environment clean.

  • As an optional process, a sealant or coating product may be sprayed to address odor or microbial concerns.

  • Filters will either be cleaned or replaced to remove odor and dirt.

For more information on duct cleaning, or to schedule an appointment, contact SERVPRO of Natchez professionals today!

Every Business Needs a Disaster Plan

10/5/2018 (Permalink)

Many business owners are caught off guard when disaster strikes. Thinking that it would never happen to them or never even considering the possibility of a disaster, they fail to have a plan in place for their business. Unfortunately, many times, once disaster strikes, it’s too late. Many businesses are forced to close permanently after disaster because they were not prepared.  With Hurricane season upon us once more, please take the time to protect your business with a few ideas from below.

According to foxbusiness.com, there are 7 steps you can take if you are a small business owner to help protect your business from disaster.

  1. Risk Assessment: Determine what types of emergencies are most likely to affect your company and then evaluate your level of preparedness. Check in with your insurance company, make sure employees are trained for emergencies, have data backed up and stored at a safe location.
  1. Review Your Insurance Coverage: Talk with your insurance agent to make sure your business is covered if hit by disaster. After determining what types of emergencies your business is most prone to, make sure your policy covers those particular types of situations. Ask about business interruption insurance which helps business owners continue to pay on-going bills while operations are shut down during disaster recovery.
  1. Create a Contingency Plan: Review your business operations and determine which are most important for the survival of your business. Form a process to manage these functions in the event of a disaster. Determine an alternate business location where business operations can continue during the recovery process.
  1. Create a Communications Plan: Disasters create chaos and having a communications plan in place in advance will help minimize panic.
  1. Back Up Your Data: Making sure all your data is backed up and stored in a safe place is critical. Cloud-based data solutions are best as they stay safe during disasters and can be accessed from any location.
  1. Build an Emergency Kit: Have an emergency kit available on site including items like water, flashlights, fire extinguishers, etc.
  1. Review and Rehearse You Plan: Once your plan is in place, make sure your employees know the plan and have practiced implementing it.

While disasters can be devastating to a business, preparation can definitely help in the recovery process. By taking action before disaster strikes and getting a plan in place, business owners can help protect their business in times of emergencies.

Identifying Commercial Client's Top Priority: Business Interruption

2/28/2018 (Permalink)

This project began December 26th, 2017. This was a commercial mold loss which began from a leaking roof earlier this year.

Avoiding business interruption is almost always the top priority of our commercial clients.

At SERVPRO of Natchez, many of our members come from backgrounds in finance and accounting professions, and they understand the importance of maintaining cash-flow for a business.

Prior to beginning a commercial restoration project, the facility is walked-through with appropriate decision makers. If avoiding business interruption is a priority, our team will work with the client to provide quality service while helping the client maintain production in their facility. Some of the ways we do that is by working out a schedule with the client so that our team works after hours or on weekends while the facility is normally closed; or, we may work around the client in specified areas during business hours; another solution is moving the client to another building until restoration and repairs have been completed. Whatever the answer may be, each is tailored to meet and satisfy the needs of our client on a case by case basis.

Commercial Damage?

SERVPRO of Natchez recognizes the urgency to react and to immediately build a recovery plan when we partner with commercial clients. Our office works with our partners to make sure documents flow through the right channels in order to simplify settlements during claims or direct pay losses. If tenants are involved, we have the flexibility to work directly with them individually. We also anticipate and recognize coverage issues so that our customers can understand how the claim will be settled.

The SERVPRO brand is the most recognized and respected brand in the mitigation industry. If there is a disaster in your commercial facility, call the team at SERVPRO of Natchez at 601.304.5554.

Preventing Fires in the Workplace

10/23/2017 (Permalink)

Anytime you have multiple employees working in a building, coming and going at different times, utilizing different appliances or outlets in the building, you run the risk of a fire.  Unless you have the absolute perfect system of accountability, there is always the risk of a forgotten appliance or forgotten candle burning that may cause fire.

Here are a few tips to help prevent fires in your business:

  • Keep your work area free of waste paper, trash and other items that can easily catch fire.

  • Check on your electrical cords. If a cord is damaged in any way, replace it. Try not to lay cords in places where they can be stepped on, as this will contribute to deterioration of the protective outside coating.

  • Don't overload your circuits.

  • Turn off electrical appliances at the end of each day.

  • Keep heat producing equipment away from anything that might burn. This includes copiers, coffee makers, computers, etc.

In the event that you DO have a fire, here are some tips to follow to ensure employee safety and expedient response by emergency responders:

  • Upon finding a fire, call 911 immediately and don't hand up with the emergency responder until told to do so.

  • Close doors when exiting to help limit the spread of smoke and fire throughout the building.

  • Never use elevators during an evacuation.

  • Follow the escape plan and meet at a per-determined place outside of your building and away from danger. Conduct a headcount to ensure all of your staff has evacuated.
